Dr. Jim Haggart is a Research Scientist specializing in Mesozoic stratigraphy and paleontology. In particular, he has undertaken investigations of the paleontology and stratigraphy of Cretaceous successions of western North America, northern Europe, and east Asia. Putting the fossils to work on more direct applications, Jim has led bedrock geologic mapping projects on Queen Charlotte Islands and Vancouver Island, in Bowser Basin rocks of north-central BC, and in volcanic/plutonic regimes of the Bella Coola and Whitesail Lake region of east-central BC. Jim works with scientists from around the Pacific Rim, using paleoecological, paleoenvironmental, and paleoclimatic analysis to unravel the complex Mesozoic geology and paleontology of this significant region of the globe. His studies of the geographic distributions of Cretaceous molluscan fossil groups of North America have provided important evidence bearing on the geological history of the so-called "exotic" terranes of the Canadian Cordillera. Jim also works actively with the Province of British Columbia and the general paleontological community in BC, in develop more efficient programs to manage the fossil resources of the province. He serves as a Voting Member of the Cretaceous Subcommission of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), as Chair of the BC Paleontological Alliance, and as a member of the Burgess Shale Science Advisory Group.
