Donate to Earth and Ocean Sciences

Over the years, many alumni, friends and corporations have made generous contributions to departmental endowment funds. With unprecedented growth in teaching, research and student activities, we rely on the income that our endowments provide to meet current challenges and to position us for exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

Endowments for which we would be grateful to receive contributions are identified below. All donations are income-tax deductible. If you wish to donate, or would like additional information on our endowments, please contact the Department administrator.

SPECIFIC PURPOSE ENDOWMENTS AND FUNDS

Earth and Ocean Sciences Building Fund:

This fund was established to offer alumni and friends the opportunity to contribute to improvements to teaching, research and student facilities in any of our four main buildings on campus. Examples of research and teaching initiatives are:

  • The Centre for Experimental Study of the Lithosphere (CESL) is one of our six exciting research facilities. CESL is a comprehensive facility that will service several major research groups in EOS. Measuring the physical properties of the earth in both dynamic and static states, it will provide fundamental constraints on the mechanical and transport properties of earth materials. Funds secured will be directed to equipment acquisition, space renewal and technical support.
  • The EOS Teaching and Learning Centre integrates the traditional role of a reading room with modern technology and ergonomics to provide quiet and open student study space. The Centre will provide students with an array of educational opportunities including: Web access to eJournals; work space for project development; a presentation facility; access to peer support; and a facility for accessing multi-media content. Funds secured will be directed to contemporize current library space, including furniture and information technology.

Our ultimate goal is to construct a new building that would provide significant new interactive teaching, study, laboratory and social space for EOS, the Faculty of Science and the campus as a whole. Donations to this fund could also be used to provide the necessary seed money to move this ambitious project along.

Geophysics Trust Fund:

Donations to this fund are used to support students in their pursuit of a career in the different aspects of Geophysics. Proceeds from this fund are used to assist both graduate and undergraduate students and have been used for such purposes as non-academic travel and conference attendance.

Pacific Museum of the Earth:

Exhibits in the Pacific Museum of the Earth cover a wide range of topics within the Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric sciences. Contributions to this fund will enable us to add additional exhibits and supplement existing collections.

Intellectual Prospecting Fund:

Income from this fund is most often used to subsidize student travel to present papers at conferences, non-course field trips and for other activities to enrich the life of the Department.

Joubin Endowment in Memory of M.Y.Williams:

This fund is used for the support of solid earth sciences for student assistance in difficult financial situations.

Richard Lee Armstrong Endowment Fund:

Dr. Armstrong was a leading geochronologist with a special affection for the North American Cordillera. This fund was set up primarily to assist and support graduate student research and activities for students who are in financial need.

May Sze Memorial Endowment Fund:

This fund dates from 1994 after May's untimely death. The purpose of this endowment is to provide assistance and support activities for undergraduate students in the Dawson and GEOROX clubs.

Mineral Deposit Resource Unit Endowment:

The objective of MDRU is to assist members by increasing the understanding of mineral deposits and methods that are used for their discovery. Income from this endowment supports the research activities of the Unit.

ENDOWED CHAIRS
