Undergraduate Students in EOS

See the Undergraduate Degrees page for information about undergraduate degree programs.

The health of any university department can be measured by the quality and enthusiasm of its undergraduate students. And the students in EOS are certainly one of the finest groups on campus. The undergraduate population at EOS is in a word... INVOLVED!!

Undergraduate Prizes and Awards

In addition to scholarships, there are bursaries and prizes awarded on the basis of a variety of criteria. These include: outstanding performance in a particular course or field of interest, involvement in student/department affairs, or overall qualities of leadership and character. Some of the awards are available to students who do not meet the minimum standard to qualify for a scholarship. See Scholarships for Undergraduate Geology Students for more details.

Facilities available to undergraduate students

See the Facilities page for laboratory and field equipment and other facilities that undergraduates use in our department.

Four EOS Clubs

Four formally organized undergraduate clubs represent the varied scientific interests within the Department. These organizations, with the help of faculty and staff, coordinate a variety of activities, including sports teams, the annual Geo-Talent(less) Night, weekly social gatherings, and field trips.

  • The DAWSON CLUB represents Geological Sciences students. Their leaders are usually plotting something in EOSC Main Room 308.
  • EEGS and SEG are UBC Student Chapters of the Environmental & Engineering Geophysical Society, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, respectively. Contact the geophysics faculty advisor for further information.
  • The GEOROX CLUB represents the Applied Science students. Find them in EOSC Main Room 302.
  • STORM is the undergraduate club for students with interests in atmospheric sciences.
  • The Oceanography Society is the undergraduatae club for students with particular interests in everything to do with oceans.

Conferences

  • WIUGC - the 40th annual Western Inter-University Geology Conference was held at UBC between January 8 - 11, 2004.

Reasons to Get Involved!

All Science and Applied Science Earth and Ocean Science students are urged to join and participate in the club activities. In addition to the obvious social benefits, the clubs also:

fieldschool
  • provide a focus for all types of student activities
  • represent the undergrad students at Department meetings and serve on Department committees
  • help to administer carrel space,
  • sponsor and help to organize professional activities such as talks and field trips
  • help to supervise the Reading Room and the Computer Lab
