Graduate Student Financial Support

The Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences guarantees funding for all full-time graduate students in thesis programs. Subject to satisfactory progress, a student in their program longer than the above dates may receive financial support until the completion of their degree.

Tuition Fees increased 2% effective May 1, 2007. Financial support amounts for September 2007 - August 2008 for Master's students will be available in July 2007.

Effective January 1, 2008, incoming PhD students will no longer receive the PhD Tuition Award. Financial support for these students will be decided at a later date.

The above funding is provided in the form of teaching assistantships, and/or research assistantships paid from supervisor's research funds. We may adjust our level of support if students receive scholarships or other financial support from the UBC Faculty of Graduate Studies or from outside this university.

Student fees of approximately $950 per year are levied to all graduate students. Included in the student fees are a U-Pass (bus pass) at $88 per term and the AMS/GSS Extended Health and Dental Plan at $200 per year. International students are charged an additional $120 for basic medical insurance for their first 3 months in Canada.

Tuition fees for international students are normally $7,200 per year. Since the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences takes part in the International Partial Tuition Scholarship program, fees are reduced to equal the tuition fees of Canadian students.

All amounts are quoted in Canadian dollars.
