Admission to PhD Candidacy
Faculty of Graduate Studies specifies that a PhD student must be admitted to
candidacy within the first two years of their PhD program. For admission to
candidacy the student must:
- pass a candidacy exam
- have their research proposal approved by their supervisory committee
- have completed all required coursework
In order to meet these FoGS regulations, in EOS:
- We require a candidacy exam - see PhD Candidacy Exams for guidelines.
- We require approval of the research proposal by the supervisory
committee. This usually occurs at the time of the candidacy
exam, but could be scheduled for a different time.
- There are no specific course requirements with in EOS. However
students may be required by their supervisory or candidacy
examination committee to complete course work.
In order for a PhD student to be admitted to candidacy for
the PhD, the Chair of the Candidacy Exam must notify the Graduate
Advisor that the student should be advanced to candidacy by memo.
