Dawson Club

The G.M.Dawson Club is the coordinating body for the undergraduate students within the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of British Columbia. The geology undergraduates participate in many field trips, both course related and extracurricular. The Dawson club provides leadership and organization for industry and Department subsidized events as well as a focal point for social activities and sports events within the department. Check out our club links to find out what we have been up to and what we have planned for the rest of the year!

Why Join?

Study Carrels
The Dawson Club administers the allocation of study carrels in the department. These are cubicle-style study spaces where you can store your binders, books, lunch etc. The carrels are located in room 308 and room 330A and provide a centre of social activity in the department. Since there is only a limited number of carrels, Dawson Club members enjoy preferred access when they become available.

Exam Files
Over the years the Dawson Club has secretly collected a number of midterms, finals, labs, problem sets and even class notes for most of the classes that geology undergraduates are required to take. Needless to say, this resource is very useful for a succesful school year. Dawson Club members enjoy exclusive access to this database.

Field Trips
The Dawson Club organizes several field trips every year. In past years, we have gone to Hawaii and Mexico. In 2002, the club organized a smaller trip to Mt. St. Helens in Washington State. While the field trips are often accompanied by an experienced elder and focus on geological aspects of the region, there is usually a good amount of partying involved as well. Almost all of our field trips are subsidized by the department, so that there are often substantial savings for students. Unfortunately spaces on field trips are limited, so that only Dawson Club members enjoy priority assignment.

Events

Dawson Club members are put on a e-mail list serve to inform them of the latest events and developments in the department, for example if there are new scholarships available or upcoming Bzzr Gardens.
