EOSC 111 - Laboratory Exploration of Planet Earth

Course Description

An examination of the processes that shape and change the planet Earth. Course content may be customized at the individual student level. Note that first year courses may be taken without EOSC 111, but EOSC 111 cannot be taken without one of EOSC 110, 112, 114 or 116.

Learning Goals

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Make interpretations and draw conclusions based on observations and evidence in an earth system science context

2. Apply qualitative and quantitative approaches to earth system data and samples

3. Appreciate that earth systems science is exciting and relevant to society and our lives

4. Recognize the interconnectedness of earth system science

EOSC111 is currently part of EOS-SEI, the EOS Science Education Initiative.

 

Textbook

Starting Fall 2006: "Earth Inquiry", by the American Geological Institute (a packet of 7 web-lab booklets). You MUST purchase these booklets in order to complete the web-based work.

Hands-on lab materials and notes are provided on the course website.

Labs

Exercises will be a combination of hands-on laboratories and web-based exercises and include the following topics (plus others): volcanic hazards, earthquake hazards, drinking water contamination, past climate from ice core data, the fossil record, plankton and deep sea sediments, water movement and estuaries, Earth materials and the rock cycle, minerals and diamond exploration, ocean wave dynamics, and dinosaurs.
