SAFETY TRAINING IN EOS

As part of your introduction to the Department and to ensure that your work will be carried out under safe and secure conditions, we provide safety information on the EOS web site at http://www.eos.ubc.ca/home/safety/ as well as a basic Safety Training Package at http://www.eos.ubc.ca/home/safety/trainingpackage.html.

Please read through the site and the package and then complete the "Personal Safety Information Checklist" within 30 days of the commencement of your employment in EOS. Pdf version is available at http://www.eos.ubc.ca/home/safety/pdf/Personal Safety Info-Checklist.pdf. Also, please send a signed and dated copy of the PSI Checklist to the Secretary of the Safety Committee for the EOS Safety Records.

The package has been designed to enable you to print out sections you wish to use for posting in your offices or labs. Please print out a copy of the list of members of the EOS Safety Committee to refer to for reporting or information purposes.

Everyone in EOS is responsible for promptly reporting any accident or incident (including near misses) to the EOS Safety Committee.

NOTE FOR LAB SUPERVISORS

If you are a Lab Supervisor, please pay special attention to the training of personnel under your management in the laboratory. Not only must they read the safety material and attend relevant UBC safety courses, you must ensure that they understand the material by going over it with them, either individually or as a group.

You are also responsible for safety in your labs and the completion of the Monthly Lab Inspection Checklists;there should be a red binder in each lab containing these lists and they must be kept up to date. You may designate someone in your research group to complete the checklists.

IMPORTANT!!

The completion of the PSI Checklists, the Monthly Lab Inspection Checklists and Accident/Incident Report Forms is very important. Proper safety training will help to ensure an accident-free environment for all EOS personnel. In addition, it should be noted that in the event that the Workers' Compensation Board inspects or investigates the Department for any reason, a lack of proper documentation showing adherence to safety regulations could result in substantial fines.
