for Best Refereed Paper in Coal and Organic Petrology, and the Dalway J. Swaine Award
for the Best Refereed Paper in Organic or Inorganic Geochemistry or Mineralogy of Coals and Source Rocks, may now be

In Memoriam: Dalway J. Swaine, 1920 - 2013
We regret that we must report the death of coal scientist
Dal Swaine, on January 22, 2013.
He spent the greater part of his very distinguished career with CSIRO of Australia, retiring as Chief Research Scientist in 1985.
He was best known for
comprehensive studies of the trace element geochemistry of coals.
These include the extensively-cited reference books Trace Elements in Coal
(1990) and Environmental Aspects of Trace Elements in Coal (with F.
Goodarzi, 1995), as well as the wider-ranging Biogeochemical Cycling of
Mineral-forming Elements (with P.A. Trudinger, 1979). His contributions
also include more than 30 scientific papers,
dealing mainly with different aspects of coal analysis and trace element
determination, the geological and environmental significance of trace
elements in coal, and the behaviour of trace elements in coal utilisation.
In recognition of his work, in 2010 TSOP inaugurated
the
Swaine Award
for the best refereed paper in inorganic or organic
geochemistry and/or mineralogy of coal or hydrocarbon source rocks.
He received many other honors, including the Peter H. Given Award for
Coal Science from The Pennsylvania State University (1998) and the
Research Excellence Award from the University of North Dakota (2000).
The Sydney Morning Herald
reports that a Mass of Christian Burial will be held Jan. 29, 2013.
In Memoriam: Coleman R. Robison, 1940 - 2012
It is with great sadness that TSOP Council receives the news of the death of one of our founding members, Coleman Robison.
Cole was a supporter and energetic worker for TSOP and its scientific goals. In 1984, while working for Texaco (later Chevron),
he was one of a small group in the Houston area who took the initiative to form TSOP which grew into an international society
for those working in the field of organic petrology. Throughout its development, Cole continued to play key roles in the Society.
He served as chair of various committees, was elected Councillor and finally served the Society as Vice-President and then
President from 1998 to 2000. He chaired one of our most challenging Annual Meetings that was scheduled for September 16th 2001
but unfortunately world events caused it to be delayed. Cole's important scientific contributions as well as his friendship
will be a loss to the TSOP family. While we are truly saddened at this great loss, we celebrate Cole's great academic achievements
that he so unselfishly shared with those with a common interest on this field.
President Isabel Suarez-Ruiz, Council members of The Society for Organic Petrology (TSOP) as well
as his many friends from the general membership send condolences to the family.
Services will be held Jan. 8, 2013.

The Spackman Award supports graduate student research in organic petrology. Applications for the 2013 award must be postmarked, faxed or e-mailed by May 17, 2013.

TSOP: 501(c)(3) status in the U.S.
We incorporated as a non-profit in the state of Virginia, USA, in 2008. Following application in June, 2009, the US Internal Revenue Service granted recognition of 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status on February 9, 2010. See the article on page 6 of the March Newsletter.
Other organizations of organic petrologists include ICCP and CSCOP.
Elsevier's International Journal of Coal Geology publishes the proceedings of TSOP Annual Meetings.
TSOP is a Member Society of AGI (publishers of Earth, formerly Geotimes; see evolution statement), and an AAPG Associated Society.
