TSOP: Selected Links on Organic Petrology
Research Institutes and Government Organizations
- Argonne Premium Coal Samples Home Page "The Premium Coal Sample Program is intended to provide the basic coal research community with the highest quality samples of a limited number (8) of coals for basic research. ...coal samples were mined, transported, processed into the desired particle and sample sizes, packaged in humid nitrogen environments as free of oxygen as possible, and carefully characterized by a variety of techniques." Background information, analytical data, and a searchable bibliography of research using these samples is provided.
- Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) of The University of Kentucky is a multidisciplinary research center addressing energy and environmental research in Kentucky. "Research programs focus on energy resources indigenous to Kentucky with efforts directed to advanced beneficiation, utilization, conversion and process technologies. Environmental issues relating to fuel use and by-product wastes constitute a growing effort, along with the derivation of high added-value materials and chemicals from energy resources." CAER publishes the Energeia newsletter (going on-line only in 2012) featuring "aspects of energy resource development and environmentally related topics." CAER and ACAA organized the 2011 World of Coal Ash Symposium May 9 - 12, 2011 in Denver, Colorado, concerning the science, applications and sustainability of coal ash utilization.
- Energy & Geoscience Institute at the University of Utah performs organic geochemistry and petrology projects.
- Illinois Clean Coal Institute (ICCI) "will promote the development and application of new and/or improved technologies that contribute to the economic and environmentally sound use of Illinois coal."
- Kentucky Geogical Survey's Coal page includes general information on coal formation, mining, and resources; links for obtaining their data; summaries of research projects; and links to search their publications and coal databases.
- Ohio Geogical Survey's Energy and Mineral Resources group includes projects and publications in Ohio coal and petroleum geology, shale gas, and carbon dioxide sequestration.
- U.S. Department of Energy performs and funds fuel research in many areas. This site includes organizational data, directories, press releases, and pages for DOE's individual Labs and Offices, as well as an extensive science and technology section and the Fossil Energy Project Database. NETL includes the former FETC which combined the Pittsburgh and Morgantown Centers.
- U.S. Geological Survey has a huge site covering its many programs such as biology, geology, mapping, and water resources. Identify and order maps and publications, or search by keyword for information, including USGS web documents and links to other servers.
- Don't miss the Eastern Energy Resources Science Center site which covers energy geoscience issues, research, and products, including their coal quality databases and maps. The site includes a searchable database of publications on coal, oil and gas, and organic geochemistry, and the 1995 TSOP Field Trip Guide on the Calvert Bluff and Manning Formations in Texas. See the
- Central Region site, with resource information and publication lists, as well.
- VITO, Vision on Technology in Belgium performs research, product and process development in non-nuclear energy, environmental and biotechnologies, and advanced materials.
- Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute's Petroleum Organic Geochemical Group (POGG) "focuses on using a variety of carbon containing compounds to understand processes which have affected petroleum basins and sediment-covered hydrothermal vent areas. A particular focus of the group is gas. Gas formation and migration processes strongly affect subsurface fluid flow which ultimately determines where and how much gas is available to drive geological processes and as an energy resource. "
