Paleo and recent observations of climate in an eastern Arctic network: PROCEAN

Ingram Research Group, Earth and Ocean Sciences, UBC

R. Grant Ingram & Scott Lamoureux (co-PI, Dept. of Geography, Queen’s University, Kingston)

The contemporary coastal ocean and sea ice environment will investigated by integrating traditional ecological knowledge, satellite imagery, meteorological observations, and ocean field data from an array of coastal transects using local community observers in Hudson Bay. Data from this network will fill a key gap in our knowledge regarding the processes that change the coastal water characteristics and extent and duration of sea ice cover. Furthermore, this project will increase our understanding of present sea ice variability and how past sea ice conditions may have altered the terrestrial hydroclimatic and aquatic environment. In a related project, local studies of the James Bay coastline will be used to look at the impact of post-glacial uplift on the nearshore conditions.
