how does the planet work?

Several members of the Seismology Group are involved with public outreach and teaching activities. Our main outreach activities are listed below.

Earthquake presentations in the The Pacific Museum of the Earth

The department of Earth and Ocean Sciences here at UBC offers both earthquake presentations and general tours of the Pacific Museum of the Earth for school groups of all ages. The earthquake presentations are conducted by members of the Seismology Group and last roughly 30 to 45 minutes. To organize for your class to come to UBC to visit the Museum and/or take part in an earthquake presentation, please see the Museum Tour Link or contact the department.

School Visits

The Scientists and Innovators in the Schools (SIS) program run by Science World provides both primary and secondary teachers with the opportunity of having scientists visit their classrooms to conduct interactive presentations on their areas of expertise. Scientists from all disciplines are registered with them. However, for topics in earthquakes, plate tectonics, and volcanism, Members of the UBC seismology group have taken part in this program since 2000.

SIS volunteers:

To have a member of our group visit your school, please fill out a request form on the Scientists and Innovators website. You could also try to contact one of the people listed above directly.
