TSOP AWARDS


Various awards have been developed by TSOP to recognize the achievements of professionals in the field, and to support and recognize students.

THE JOHN CASTAÑO HONORARY MEMBERSHIP AWARD

 

The highest honor of The Society for Organic Petrology, provided for in its Bylaws, is Honorary Membership. It is awarded to persons distinguished in a scientific discipline of significance to the Society, in recognition of their contributions in research, service to TSOP, or education.





THE RALPH GRAY AWARD
Best Refereed Paper in Coal and Organic Petrology

 



A TSOP award for the best refereed paper in coal and organic petrology was approved by Council in early 2009. With the permission of the Gray family, the award was named after Ralph Gray (1923-2009), a petrologist with wide-ranging experience and interests, particularly well-known for his work in industrial applications.





THE DAL SWAINE AWARD
Best Refereed Paper in Coal and Hydrocarbon Source Rock Geochemistry

 



The Dal Swaine Award for Best Published paper is presented to the authors of the paper judged to be the best for the year in inorganic or organic geochemistry and/or mineralogy of coal or hydrocarbon source rocks.






JOHN C. CRELLING DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

 


The John C. Crelling Distinguished Service Award recognizes the contributions of members who have provided distinguished service to TSOP as a Society, typically in committee or elected Council positions, over multiple years.





LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP AWARD

 


 
The Lifetime Membership Award is designed for TSOP members, council members and committee members, who have contributed to the society in a substantial way over a long period of time.





THE SPACKMAN AWARD
Graduate Student Research Grants

 




The Spackman Award, formerly known as the TSOP Student Grants Program, supports graduate thesis research in organic petrology. Research must demonstrate the utility and significance of organic petrology (which includes coal petrology, kerogen petrology, organic geochemistry and related disciplines) in solving the thesis problem.

Each year two monetary awards, of U.S. $1,000 and $750 are granted.





COLIN WARD EMERGING STUDENT RESEARCHER AWARD









Award is designed to support a PhD students’ first attendance at the annual TSOP meeting. The award also is designed to integrate the PhD student into the TSOP community. The priority is given to students who are early in their research, and reside in countries with low TSOP membership.

The award is funded by Kathie Ward and named after Colin Ward (1945-2018) in recognition of his outstanding contributions in research, and service to TSOP. Each year one monetary award of U.S. $700 is granted.





STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD

 


Award funds travel of students making a presentation at the annual TSOP meeting. Usually, three awards of $1,000 each are given.







DANIELLE KONDLA OUTSTANDING STUDENT PRESENTATION AWARD

 
Danielle Kondla Outstanding Student Presentation Award, formely known as the Best Student Presentation Award, recognizes best student oral and poster presentation during TSOP annual meeting. With the permission of the Kondla family, the award was named after Danielle Kondla (1982-2017) in honor of her achivements and contributions to TSOP.

Two awards, $300 for the oral presentation and $200 for the poster presentation, are given during TSOP conference dinner.
